Enna Solla Pogiraai!?!
Oh, I’m bored of repeating. Hope you’ve untangled your earphones and got your phone playing this song, as you read this piece.
Like I mentioned in the very 1st post of this blog. “Kandukonden Kandukonden” is one of the very 1st cassettes I owned. You know, as a kid I never had the ear for Melodies. ‘Smayiyai’ remained my favorite all my school days.
In my teens, Puberty hit me.. quite hard. The fascination of ‘Arumbu Meesai, Kurumbu Paarvai, School Crush’ & other routine teen-crap happened to me. I started to fall for love songs, having an imaginary girl-friend in my mind and that’s the phase where melodies started to make more sense for me. On a revisit, ‘Enna Solla Pogiraai’ popped up in my speakers. I repeated the song in my cassette player until I lost count. (No kid, repeating the same song in a cassette player isn’t an easy task like you guys do these days with a single button). Once the song ends, I used to rewind & forward to punch in the correct timestamp. At a stage, it was a routine and I knew when the song would exactly come.
So, why this song suddenly?!? Coz, I attended ARR’s recent concert in Chennai and happened to hear Benny Dayal & Haricharan sing this one. I MISSED SHANKAR MAHADEVAN’s rendition because I love the way Shankar Mahadevan, emoted – elevated the song to something else. Especially in these lines,
"விடியல் வந்த பின்னாலும்
விடியாத இரவு எது
பூவாசம் வீசும் உந்தன் கூந்தலடி
இவ்வுலகம் இருண்ட பின்னும் இருளாத பாகம் எது"
I’m amazed by the way he finishes off “விடியாத இரவு எது”, “இருளாத பாகம் எது” lines. [Trivia: Shankar Mahadevan bagged a National Award for this song].
Not just that. In life, I’m in a phase where this song makes M-O-R-E Sense! Quoting something in order to make it clear.
"என் தளிர் மலரே
இன்னும் தயக்கமென்ன?
என்னைப் புரியாதா? இது வாழ்வா சாவா?
என்ன சொல்லப் போகிறாய்!?!" :)
Ah! I can’t miss A R Rahman in this post. It’s been 27 years since his debut (15th Aug 92’ – Roja). I love the folksy fuse this amazing tune has & the spectacular interludes this song has! 2nd interlude is Magical af! This album is the 2nd from Rajiv Menon & ARR, needless to tell about Rajiv’s ears for good music. They struck gold with this one too! Penned by Vairamuthu, his contribution did add more sparkle to this song!
Okay, Cya. I’m hitting my bed with earphones on to repeat this song again. I really hope this post made you revisit ‘Enna Solla Pogiraai’. See you all soon with another one from my “favourites” collection! 🙂 Please write to me if you have any memories associated with this song. Would be really glad to read’em! 🙂
Yours truly, Pattukkaaran 🙂 Bubye!
